In 1968 Mario Giannini founded an artisan workshop producing luxury footwear called "Ducale".

The name itself reflected the goal of creating high-quality objects for a noble clientele. Located in central Italy, the workshop drew inspiration from the rich tradition of arts and crafts that flourished during the era of the medieval duchies.

In just five years the workshop transformed into a company and in 1973 Doucal's was born, an Anglicized name to express the style and quality of Italian footwear inspired by English tradition.

The influence of English craftsmanship

Mario Giannini went to Northampton, the English shoemaking district, for an internship on hand-made Goodyear welts.

During this experience he learned the secrets of different constructions and the rules of the English style which had a significant influence on the European market in the 1970s.

Upon returning to Italy, Mario Giannini instilled in his company the dedication and respect for craftsmanship that he had seen and appreciated in English factories.

Despite British influence, Doucal's remained and continues to be an Italian company with a passion for the beauty, softness, and lightness of footwear.

In recent years, many companies have relocated to industrial areas, but Doucal's has chosen a countertrend: the scattered factory. Production is spread across six renovated and interconnected old factories, without altering the village's original architecture.
